Standard mercury lamps are fine for some things, but they don’t always cut it. If you’re working with thick coatings or deep-section polymers, you need a different kind of punch. That’s where our Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps come in. We shift the light toward those longer UV wavelengths. Why? Because certain photo-initiators just won’t wake up unless the light hits them exactly right.
The Heat Trade-off
Here’s the deal: by pushing the emission into that 300nm to 400nm range, you get way better penetration. The resin cures all the way through, not just on the surface. But there’s a catch. These lamps runhot. If you don’t have your cooling fans or water-jackets dialed in, you’re going to burn through bulbs way too fast. We spend a lot of time tweaking the wattage and voltage so the plasma stays stable and your quartz envelope doesn’t melt. It’s a balancing act, but we’ve got it down to a science.
