
Getting Your PCB Curing Right with Gallium Iodide UV Lamps
If you’re working with PCB fabrication, you know the struggle of getting the photoresist just right. Standard mercury lamps can be a bit blunt—they often over-cure the substrate, which is a headache nobody needs. That’s where Gallium iodide lamps come in. They hit a very specific UV wavelength. Instead of blasting the board with everything, they target exactly what the resist needs to harden quickly without messing up the rest of the board.
The Nitty-Gritty: Power and Heat
We build these lamps for the real world—meaning high-volume lines that can’t afford to slow down. We’ve tuned the power and voltage so they hit operating temperature fast. Now, here is the trade-off: high wattage lets you keep the lamp footprint small on your conveyor, but it puts a lot more pressure on your ballast. Just a heads-up—make sure your power supply can handle that initial strike voltage, or you’ll be dealing with tripped breakers all day. Then there’s the heat. These lamps gethot. Really hot. Along with the UV, you’re getting a lot of infrared radiation. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, your PCB substrates are going to warp. It’s a simple fix, but a costly mistake if you overlook it.
Built to Last
To keep these from cracking under all that thermal stress, we use high-purity quartz for the envelope. It lets the UV energy through without absorbing it and heating up the glass itself. We also spent a lot of time on the electrodes. We engineered them to stop “sputtering,” which is that annoying process where the tube starts to darken over time.
